is located in Rwamagana, a town about an hour outside Rwanda's capital city, Kigali, in 2007. The Centre provides education and dormitory accommodation for Kigali street children seeking a better quality of life.
The Champion Centre consists of accommodation, classrooms, a multi purpose hall, kitchen, basketball court and a sports ground. As well as feeding, clothing and educating the students, the Champion Centre ensures that students receive spiritual support and if required, medical treatment.
The centre caters for students with a variety of subjects and classes at three levels. The main subjects are maths, social science, English and Kinyarwanda. While the students get on very well, the adjustment from street life is difficult. There is a large range in the age of students in each class; many of these former street children had little, if any, education.
One of the aims of AEE Rwanda is to reintroduce these children back into the community and families, either natural families or foster families. The costs of establishing phase one of the centre was extensive and AEE is keen to further develop this project, with the support of donors.
